Auyuittuq National Park

I've been fascinated by the Arctic since I was a little boy. There's something about the remote wilderness, being hundreds or even thousands of miles from civilization. The cold, the unique plants, and the wildlife have always drawn me in. I've always wanted to experience it for myself.

Having that opportunity felt like stepping into another world. Baffin Island, one of the largest islands on the planet, is incredibly remote, and getting there was an adventure in itself. After multiple flights, I arrived in Pangnirtung, where the journey continued with an hour-long boat ride through stunning fjords to reach the park. There are no trees hereā€”just lichen, moss, grass, and the occasional small shrub clinging to the rocky terrain. The harsh Arctic landscape was both beautiful and stark, with countless glaciers hugging some of the most epic mountains I've ever seen.

The scale of the landscape is immense, and it's almost impossible to express in a photo. For example, Mount Thor featured in the photo above, has the world's largest vertical cliff of 4,100 ft. That is over 1,000 ft higher than El Capitan in Yosemite. Each day, I hiked through the rugged terrain, exploring for photographic compositions. The arctic light is also extreme in that sunrise and sunset can last for hours. Though it rained and snowed, the weather gave perfect conditions for photography.
